During a recent event at the University of Calabar, Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged the ongoing difficulties facing Nigeria but expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would create a significant legacy for future generations.
Speaking at the UNICAL ’87 Law Class Reunion 2024 in Calabar, Akpabio attributed the nation’s current hardships to years of poor governance rather than the actions of the present administration.
As a proud alumnus of UNICAL, he stated, “The struggles we are experiencing today are not the fault of the current government; they stem from prolonged mismanagement in our country.”
He further explained, “A nation lacking essential infrastructure cannot hope to grow or save for difficult times. In the face of global economic challenges, such a country is destined to suffer.”
However, Akpabio shared an optimistic outlook, declaring, “Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, there is a renewed sense of hope. The initiatives we are implementing today are aimed at securing a better future, not just for ourselves but for generations to come. This administration is committed to leaving behind a meaningful legacy.”
Earlier in the day, Akpabio and his former classmates visited both the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu, and the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi. During their visit, Obi outlined the numerous challenges facing the university, particularly regarding infrastructure.
Akpabio informed the university leadership that the ’87 Law Class convened to assess the current situation of their alma mater and explore ways to contribute positively to the institution that shaped their careers.
In a show of support, he announced that the class would be donating two Coaster buses to the Faculty of Law and the UNICAL Student Union Government (SUG).
