Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged Nigerians to make the most of any opportunity to enjoy free food, amidst the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation.
Unmoved by the hardships many are currently enduring, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State remarked, “These are tough times, so wherever you find free food, be sure to take advantage of it,” in a video that gained traction over the weekend.
His comments, made in a light-hearted manner during a plenary session, drew laughter from fellow senators despite the serious economic difficulties stemming from policies implemented by the Bola Tinubu administration.
The government’s decisions, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, and increased taxation, have significantly inflated food prices, rendering basic goods unaffordable for countless Nigerians.
Recently, fuel prices surged at filling stations in Abuja, rising to N1,030 per litre from N897, while Lagos stations increased prices to N998 from N868 per litre, marking a second increase within just a month.
Mr. Akpabio, known for his controversial remarks, previously made headlines in July during a conference for Niger Delta ethnic groups, youth, and women in Port Harcourt.
There, he dismissed the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest, saying, “Those who wish to protest can do so, but let us enjoy our meals here.”
