The Senate issued a grave warning on Tuesday, highlighting the looming threat of nationwide protests in Nigeria unless urgent measures are taken by the Federal Government to address the severe food crisis gripping the nation.
During a session focused on Nigeria’s food security challenges, senators raised alarm over the depleted state of federal government-owned food reserves across the country. They emphasized that this critical shortage has left many Nigerians grappling with acute hunger, prompting fears of social unrest.
The discussion was prompted by a motion titled “Urgent need to address food insecurity and market exploitation of consumables in Nigeria,” jointly sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume. Senator Ndume painted a stark picture of the situation, noting that hunger is becoming increasingly widespread not only in Sudan but also in northern Nigeria, where agricultural activities are hampered by insecurity and climate-related challenges.
“In the North, we are already witnessing alarming levels of hunger. Farmers are unable to tend to their fields, and conflicts between farmers and herders exacerbate the situation. Similarly, the South East and South West regions are facing their own agricultural crises,” Ndume stated during the session.
The senator further pointed out the exorbitant prices of essential food items, which have soared beyond the reach of many Nigerians. He stressed the urgent need for decisive action by government representatives to alleviate the suffering of the populace.
“This is the first time Nigeria is being mentioned among nations on the brink of a severe food crisis. As elected representatives, we have a responsibility to act decisively or at least raise our voices on behalf of the people,” Ndume urged his colleagues.
The motion garnered bipartisan support, with senators from various geopolitical zones expressing concern and calling for immediate intervention measures. They underscored the need for targeted policies to stabilize food prices, enhance agricultural productivity, and bolster food reserves to mitigate the impact of the crisis on vulnerable populations.
