Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has asked for an apology from Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, after he made remarks about wanting to remove her from office in 2027.
The relationship between Kingibe and Wike has been strained since they started their roles. They have often criticized each other publicly.
Wike questioned Kingibe’s achievements for her constituents since her election. Kingibe was offended, noting she is significantly older than Wike and believes he should show her more respect.
She stated, “He clearly doesn’t understand the concept of the FCT. He says he doesn’t want to be my friend, but governance isn’t about friendship,” she said
Kingibe expressed willingness to cooperate with Wike if he apologizes for his previous remark telling her to “go and hang on a transformer.” She insisted, “Once he apologizes, we can start afresh. But until then, we stay in our lanes. Respect should be given, especially since I am older.”
On July 1, Wike threatened Kingibe during the inauguration of the Mabushi Bus Terminal in Abuja, stating she wouldn’t be reelected in 2027 due to her poor performance.
Wike challenged, “If we’ve done well, we’ve done well. If not, then not. We’ve done well in the short time since President Tinubu appointed us. You say there are no schools and hospitals; what have you done as a legislator? How many bills have you sponsored to improve education and health sectors? If you are so popular, run in 2027, and we will see.”
Kingibe, a member of the Labour Party, defeated Philip Aduda, an ally of Wike, in the 2023 election to become the FCT senator. Since then, Kingibe and Wike have been in conflict, with Kingibe accusing Wike of ignoring her despite her representing the capital.
Wike claimed Kingibe’s criticisms stemmed from not being appointed as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on the FCT. Amidst the ongoing security issues in the capital, Kingibe accused Wike of not taking her calls and not prioritizing the interests of FCT residents.
