Senator Mohammed Ndume, representing the Southern Borno Senatorial District, has voiced concerns about the Nigerian military’s preparedness to effectively combat insurgency and banditry.
His remarks came as he dismissed rumors circulating on social media suggesting that his convoy was attacked by suspected Boko Haram militants.
Addressing the media at his residence in Maiduguri following a condolence visit to the families of recent terror victims in Ngoshe, Kirawa, Ashigashiya, and other communities within the Gwoza local government area, Ndume emphasized the challenges faced by the military.
“On Tuesday, I, along with other concerned stakeholders and a military escort, was en route to Ngoshe to express condolences to the families of those tragically killed by terrorists before heading to Kirawa,” he explained.
“We received an urgent alert regarding an ambush involving Cameroonian soldiers and civilians along the Pulka-Kirawa road.”
After paying respects to the victims’ families in Ngoshe, Ndume and his group bravely continued to Kirawa, despite the threat of renewed terrorist attacks.
“We successfully arrived in Kirawa, where we also consoled the families of individuals who lost their lives to the attacks last week. We urged residents to remain strong and calm in the face of renewed Boko Haram threats,” Ndume stated.
He further detailed that the ambush on the Kirawa road specifically targeted a Cameroonian businessman, Alhaji Kadi, who was killed alongside an unidentified woman, with several others sustaining injuries.
“The military is earnest and dedicated to putting an end to Boko Haram’s atrocities, but achieving this goal requires them to be fully equipped, trained, armed, and motivated,” Ndume concluded.
