Former senator Shehu Sani, who served Kaduna Central in the national assembly, has provided insight into the escalating tensions surrounding the Kano Emir’s palace.

In a brief post on his X account, Sani remarked, “For the sake of peace, there must be significant restraint in the use of force, might, and power regarding the ongoing emirship dispute in Kano.”

The unrest at the palace erupted early Friday morning when heavily armed police officers surrounded the Emir of Kano’s residence, starting their presence as early as 6 a.m.

Insider reports suggest that the tensions may be linked to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi’s plans to appoint a district head for Bichi town.

This latest incident is not the first controversy surrounding the Kano emirship. In May, the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, was dethroned by Governor Abba Yusuf while he was away, leading to the reinstatement of the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was promptly moved to the Kofar Kudu palace.

Bayero eventually returned to the state and took residence at the Nassarawa mini palace, prompting legal battles both supporting and opposing the state government’s decision.

The problems concerning the Kano emirship can be traced back to 2020 when former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje enacted legislation to create four new emirates within the state.

This action was perceived as an attempt to diminish the authority of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was later suspended by the government, igniting widespread protests and backlash from various groups.
