Shehu Sani, the former senator who served Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has urged Northern governors to reconsider their stance on the tax reform bill proposed by President Bola Tinubu, advocating for constructive input rather than outright opposition.

Sani responded to the recent rejection of the bill by the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF), asserting that the legislation will not harm the North or any other region, but will instead provide significant economic advantages and equitable treatment for all areas of the country.

Taking to his X account, Sani encouraged the Northern governors to set aside their biases and thoroughly review the bill, highlighting its comprehensive approach to harmonizing and simplifying tax administration while streamlining operational procedures and enforcement.

“The Tax Reform Bill poses no threat to the North or any part of Nigeria. It is designed to be economically advantageous and equitable across all regions,” he stated.

“Leaders should focus on the content of the bill rather than emotional reactions. It represents a significant step toward harmonizing and simplifying tax processes and improving their enforcement.”

He emphasized that the bill is expected to enhance revenue generation and protection for the states while also addressing corruption associated with tax waivers granted to influential business figures.

“There is no provision in the document that suggests any region will suffer, that taxes will rise, or that jobs will be lost. I implore the Northern Governors to reconsider their rejection of the bill, engage with it thoughtfully, and suggest improvements where needed.”

Sani concluded by asserting that the National Assembly must approach this crucial bill with the seriousness it deserves and urged lawmakers to carefully examine its content.
