The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) is ramping up efforts to enhance Nigeria’s industrial growth by ensuring the production of high-quality products.

During the celebration of World Standards Day on Saturday in Abuja, SON’s Director General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, emphasized that standardization is fundamental to industrial development.

The theme for the 2024 celebration, “Shared Vision for a Better World,” highlights Sustainable Development Goal Number 9 (SDG 9) of the United Nations, which focuses on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

Okeke explained that SDG 9 aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. He stated, “Standards are crucial in achieving these goals and in facilitating the development of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices.”

He further asserted, “Standardization is the bedrock of industrialization; it is the key to what we do. It takes root from everything we do at SON.” He elaborated on SON’s role in enhancing quality assurance through regulation, certification, and conformity assessment.

Okeke noted the significant impact of standardization on the national economy, asserting that the production of competitive products adds value for export. He commended the contributions of National Technical Committee members, experts, regulators, and industry professionals in developing standards over time.

“We are creating awareness on the importance of standardization in the global economy, and we are also recognizing the efforts of everyone who has participated in standardization in Nigeria,” he stated.

In his closing remarks, Engr. Yahaya Bukat, the Director of Standards, affirmed SON’s commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to enhance quality assurance as a means to grow the country’s economy.
