The finals, held in Lagos, featured intense matches across various categories, with Nigeria’s top-ranked player, Gabriel Olufunmilayo, and defending champion, Rofiat Abdulazeez, emerging victorious in the men’s and women’s senior categories, respectively.
Gabriel Olufunmilayo showcased his dominance in the men’s final by defeating Samuel Kehinde in straight sets. This victory marks Olufunmilayo’s first title at the tournament, cementing his status as a leading figure in Nigerian squash. His performance was characterized by powerful strokes and strategic play, leaving Kehinde unable to mount a significant challenge.
In the women’s final, Rofiat Abdulazeez defended her title with a commanding victory over her rival, Busayo Olatunji. Abdulazeez’s consistency and agility on the court were evident as she navigated the match with precision, securing her position as a formidable champion in the sport.
Before the senior finals, Aishat Abdulraheem retained her title in the women’s U-16 category by defeating Zainab Ishola in straight sets. Abdulraheem’s victory was a testament to her skill and determination, showcasing the emerging talent within Nigeria’s youth squash scene.
The highlight of the day was the boys’ U-16 final, where Matthew Yusuf dethroned two-time champion Shuaib Giwa in a gripping contest. Yusuf triumphed with the match reaching a fever pitch during the second set. Despite Giwa’s strong comeback to win the second set, Yusuf regained control in the third and fourth sets, preventing the game from reaching a decider. His victory was met with enthusiastic applause from the spectators.
“It was a tough match, and I feel very delighted to have been able to win,” Yusuf said post-match, reflecting the intensity and excitement of the competition.
Tomi Falase, Chairman of the Lagos State Squash Association, expressed his satisfaction with the quality of play and the promising talent on display. “We scheduled the boys’ final in order to showcase them,” Falase noted. “We want people to see the young players and what they can do. Top-class squash between them, and for the sponsor to keep supporting this event for the third straight year, it means we are doing something right in developing the game.”
The event also drew praise from Ayo Otuyalo, Group Managing Director of Prime Atlantic, who reiterated the firm’s commitment to the tournament. “I play squash as well, and I believe we must showcase the talents that we have. I’m quite impressed by the U-16 final, and we have something special for the winner in the coming days. That was the high point of this event for me, and we will keep supporting it,” Otuyalo stated.
