The only way towards achieving this stride is through empowerment.
Opara disclosed this as public relations professionals converged in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for the 61st Annual General Meeting and 2024 edition of Nigeria Public Relations Week which serve as timely platforms to reaffirm it’s commitment and chart a course towards a better future for PR professionals
“Public relations professionals play a crucial role in shaping the image of a country on the global stage. In the case of Nigeria, this is particularly important as the country often faces negative stereotypes and misconceptions in the international community. Empowering PR professionals in Nigeria is essential in order to showcase the country in a positive light and attract investment, tourism, and partnerships.
He said stakeholders play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s narrative and enhancing its image on the world stage. The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, it’s imperative to reflect on the pivotal role of Public Relations (PR) professionals in shaping Nigeria’s image and narrative both domestically and internationally.
“The journey of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) since its conception in 1963 by the likes of Dr. Sam Epelle, Alex Nwokedi, Aduke Alakija, Theo Awobogu, Kunle Ojora, Wilton High and Dan Agbakova. Underscores the recognition of the need for a structured approach to information management. The attainment of chartered status in 1990 further solidified the importance of PR in the Nigerian context. However, despite these strides, there remains a pressing need to empower PR professionals to take the lead in information gathering and dissemination.
In a globalized world where perception often shapes reality, effective PR becomes not just a luxury but a strategic necessity for nations seeking to build positive reputations and foster understanding. Nigeria, with its rich cultural heritage, diverse population, and burgeoning economy, stands to gain significantly from a well-managed PR strategy.
At the heart of this strategy lies the expertise of PR professionals. These individuals possess the skills, knowledge, and ethical framework necessary to pull through the complexities of modern communication landscapes. By entrusting them with the responsibility of information management, Nigeria can guarantee that its narrative is crafted with accuracy, integrity, and relevance.
“Moreover, allowing PR professionals to spearhead information management is not just about promoting a favorable image; it’s also about fostering transparency, accountability, and trust. In a society where misinformation and disinformation abound, the role of credible communicators becomes all the more critical. By adhering to professional standards and best practices, PR professionals can help combat falsehoods and build credibility both at home and abroad.
“As Nigeria strives to position itself as a global player on the economic, political, and cultural fronts, the need for effective PR becomes increasingly evident. The 2024 Nigeria Public Relations Week and the 61st Annual General Meeting serve as timely platforms to reaffirm this commitment and chart a course towards a future where PR professionals play a central role in shaping Nigeria’s narrative and enhancing its image on the world stage.
“Providing PR professionals in Nigeria with access to training and education programs can help them stay up-to-date on the latest trends and techniques in the field. This will allow them to effectively promote Nigeria’s strengths and counter negative perceptions.
Also, collaboration and networking among PR professionals in Nigeria can help them exchange ideas, best practices, and strategies for promoting the country effectively. This can result in a more cohesive and coordinated effort to improve Nigeria’s image.
Stressing the need to leveraged on technology and social media: In today’s digital age, PR professionals must be adept at leveraging technology and social media platforms to reach a global audience. By using these tools effectively, they can showcase Nigeria’s culture, heritage, and achievements to a wider audience.
Furthermore, highlighting the success stories of PR professionals can play a key role in highlighting success stories from Nigeria, whether it be in business, arts, sports, or any other field. By showcasing these achievements, they can help build a positive narrative around the country and inspire others to engage with Nigeria.
