StarTimes Nigeria, in partnership with the Chinese Embassy, has introduced the 2024 Chinese Film Festival in Abuja, which took place from May 25 to 31.
The festival aimed to promote diversity and harmony while providing Nigerians with an opportunity to gain insights into China and its people. It showcased popular Chinese films from 2024, such as YOLO (You Only Live Once), Speedy Life 2, and Jue Ji.
Mr. Joshua Wang, the CEO of StarTimes, shared his excitement for the event and emphasized the festival’s role in promoting cultural exchange.
He mentioned that the festival symbolizes the strong friendship between China and Nigeria, showcasing a mutual love for storytelling and appreciation for diverse cultures.
He further mentioned that StarTimes has introduced a variety of Chinese movies, dramas, and series to the Nigerian audience and they have even dubbed Chinese content into Hausa and Yoruba for better understanding. Wang mentioned that festival films can be watched on the StarTimes mobile app, allowing viewers to enjoy them on-the-go.
Mr. Li Xuda, the director of the Chinese Cultural Center Nigeria (CCCN) and the Chinese Cultural Counsellor, highlighted the significance of Nollywood to China.
Xuda mentioned that although Nollywood is the world’s second-largest film industry in terms of the quantity of films produced annually, it has not yet penetrated the Chinese film market, which stands as the second largest global film market.
Also, After years of fast growth, the worldwide film sector has become a vital aspect of the creative cultural industry. The film festival aimed to provide Nigerians with a better understanding of authentic China and its people. To establish a significant platform for enhancing cultural exchange and cooperation in the film industry between both countries, and construct a bridge of friendship to strengthen good relations.
