The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed the power fluctuations experienced in parts of the country on Saturday to line trippings, clarifying that the national grid did not collapse.
In a statement by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, it was revealed that the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped at 1:41 p.m., followed by the Benin-Omotosho line, disrupting bulk power supply to the Lagos axis.
The line trippings caused interruptions at several power stations, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. While these facilities have been restored, the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line was still undergoing repairs as of Saturday evening.
Mbah explained that before the trippings, the national grid had a total generation capacity of 4,335.63 MW, which dropped to 2,573.23 MW after the incident, emphasizing that no grid collapse occurred.
“Earlier today, at about 13:41 hrs, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line. These consequently affected bulk supply only on the Lagos axis.
“It is important to clarify that the grid did not experience a collapse. Restoration efforts are ongoing for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line,” Mbah stated.
She further reassured the public that TCN remains committed to strengthening the transmission grid to minimize such incidents in the future.
