The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has identified the cause of recent power outages affecting several communities in North West Nigeria over the past 24 hours.
In a statement issued on Monday, signed by the General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company detailed that the outage impacted communities including Hadejia, Gumel, Gagarawa, Nguru, Mallammadori, Birniwa, Kafin-Hausa, Auyo, Guri, Kaugama, Taura, Garki, Maigatari, Babura, Kirikasamma, and Machina Local Government Areas in Jigawa and Yobe States.
According to Mbah, the power disruption resulted from a trailer carrying a container that collided with Tower T16 located in Gunduwawa, Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State. The impact destroyed two legs of the tower, causing it to buckle and fall, which tripped the Kano-Hadejia 132kV Transmission Line, resulting in a loss of approximately 16.6MW.
The statement explained that the affected areas will remain without power until the tower is repaired. TCN is working diligently to restore power as quickly as possible.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria reports that a trailer with a container struck the base of TCN’s Tower T16 in Gunduwawa Village on Sunday, August 11, 2024. This incident led to the destruction of the tower and subsequent power outage across several communities in North Western Nigeria,” Mbah said.
The statement continued, “At approximately 9:28 AM on August 11, 2024, the Kano-Hadejia 132kV Transmission Line tripped, resulting in a loss of about 16.6MW. Attempts to reclose the line to maintain power supply were unsuccessful.
A patrol team was dispatched and discovered that the trailer truck had damaged the tower, which fell and impacted a nearby residential building. Fortunately, there were no casualties. The incident has been reported to the Gezawa Divisional Police Station, and the driver is currently detained.”
The affected areas will experience power outages until repairs are completed. TCN is committed to dismantling the damaged tower, erecting a new one, and restringing the lines to restore bulk power supply. A contractor has been hired to reconstruct the tower and is expected to begin work on site today.
