Eyewitnesses report that the altercation began when Mr. Nsikan, a senior mathematics teacher, confronted 14-year-old student Ubong Udo in front of his classmates.

According to several students present, Mr. Nsikan became visibly agitated when Ubong could not produce his completed homework. The situation quickly escalated, with Mr. Nsikan reportedly striking Ubong multiple times with a cane on his head.

The assault continued despite pleas from other students and a fellow teacher who intervened. Ubong eventually lost consciousness and was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Doctors have confirmed that the student suffered severe head trauma and multiple contusions.

Authorities have detained Mr. Nsikan for questioning. The Calabar Police Department has launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether additional charges will be filed.
