President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to lead the governing council of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, located in Sokoto State.
This appointment is part of a broader initiative, as President Tinubu has approved 155 individuals to serve as chairmen and members of the governing councils across various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, publicized the complete list of appointed chairmen for the university governing councils via Twitter on Saturday, May 18.
This development comes amidst heightened tensions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has threatened to initiate a nationwide strike due to the government’s delay in establishing governing councils for universities.
ASUU has issued a two-week ultimatum, starting from Tuesday, May 14, demanding prompt action from the government. In response, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has appealed for patience from the academic staff, assuring them that efforts are underway to form the university councils.
