The National President Ahmed Bola Tinubu gave his approval for the appointment of over 555 individuals to act as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of Governing Boards for 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.
Moving on, the President, Tinubu finally approved the list of the nominees which was chosen by the Ministry of Education. The list is made up of 50 federal universities, 37 polytechnics and 24 colleges.
The Minister of Education Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, signed the document and mentioned that “the inauguration and retreat for the Governing Councils are scheduled for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja and both events will start at 9:00 am each day”.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on information and strategy mentioned that the Ministry of Education makes the nominations and forwards them to the president to sign. He mentioned further that the ministry has the freedom to release it from their end.
However, this particular development came out barely four days after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, protested about the non-constitution of the governing councils which was dissolved almost one year by the government.
During a briefing at the University of Abuja, the academic union also faulted the 35 per cent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary for increment for other academics in the university system.
