President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate payment of an increase in military salaries, including three months of arrears, and the release of funds for the settlement of pension and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.
In a statement shared with Defence Correspondents in Abuja by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, confirmed that military personnel have started receiving alerts regarding the three-month salary increase.
The Minister expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his swift action in securing the necessary funds for these payments, highlighting the President’s commitment to the welfare of both serving and retired military personnel. Dr. Matawalle emphasized that the payment of pension arrears to retirees would continue to receive focused attention.
“This initiative reflects the President’s dedication to enhancing the living standards of those who have served the nation,” the statement read.
Additionally, Dr. Matawalle acknowledged the significant efforts and support of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, whose commitment was instrumental in ensuring the successful disbursement of the payments.
The Minister also urged the Nigerian military to remain dedicated to their duties, assuring them that President Tinubu is fully committed to boosting their morale and providing the necessary resources to combat insecurity in the country.
“Despite initial setbacks, be rest assured that Mr. President will do everything within his power to uplift our military forces as they confront the challenges of insecurity,” Dr. Matawalle affirmed.
He further praised the contributions of the Nigerian military in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other forms of criminality, stressing the vital role they play in securing the nation. Dr. Matawalle assured the officers and personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces that President Tinubu remains resolute in his mission to eliminate insecurity, supported by the readiness and resilience of the military.
