President Bola Tinubu has recently signed into law two significant bills aimed at enhancing development across Nigeria’s geo-political zones. The bills include the North-West Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024, and the South-East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2023.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the North-West Development Commission is established to address the region’s multidimensional crises.
This commission will focus on the reconstruction of infrastructure such as roads, houses, and business premises that have been damaged, as well as tackling poverty, improving literacy, and addressing ecological and environmental issues in the North-West states.
Similarly, the South-East Development Commission aims to oversee the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure, including roads and buildings, which have suffered damage in the South-East zone. The commission will also address ecological challenges and other developmental issues in the South-East states.
President Tinubu emphasized his commitment to fairness, equity, and unity in building the nation. He stated that these new commissions represent a step towards equitable development and inclusive governance, with the goal of providing quality services to all Nigerians and strengthening the nation’s unity.
