President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Lagos on Monday, January 6, for Accra, Ghana, to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for Tuesday, January 7.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, it was recalled that Mahama, who served as Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, won reelection in December 2024.
He is set to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose tenure spanned from 2017 to 2025.
President Tinubu’s visit follows an invitation from President-elect Mahama, who had earlier visited the Nigerian leader in December. The statement highlighted the close personal relationship between the two leaders, as well as the strong historical and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other African leaders at the swearing-in ceremony, further strengthening regional cooperation and solidarity.
The president will be accompanied by a delegation that includes the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior government officials.
President Mahama’s return to leadership marks a pivotal moment for Ghana, and President Tinubu’s attendance underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strong ties with its West African neighbour.
