The Federal Government has emphasized that ensuring food security is a primary focus of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, stated that since Tinubu took office in May 2023, the government has initiated several programs aimed at bolstering food security across the nation.
“Food security is at the forefront of the agricultural sector as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda. It is integral to Nigeria’s economy and is expected to significantly contribute to poverty alleviation and promote gender inclusivity,” Abdullahi remarked during an interview.
He added, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deeply concerned about our food security status. He often expresses his vision for Nigeria to be a place where no one goes to bed hungry. We are committed to realizing that vision and are working diligently toward it.”
In recent years, food prices in Nigeria have surged to alarming levels, making them unaffordable for millions of citizens.
In response to this situation, the Federal Government, along with state governments, has implemented various measures, including distributing palliative aid to many Nigerians.
Shortly after taking office, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on food security.
“We will leverage our security framework to safeguard farms and farmers, allowing them to return to their fields without fear of attacks,” the president asserted.
He also highlighted that the Central Bank of Nigeria will continue to support the agricultural value chain, and announced that 500,000 hectares of land have been identified to enhance the availability of arable land for farming.
