Dada Olusegun, Special Adviser on social media to President Bola Tinubu, has revealed that the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, once endorsed similar tax reforms that Tinubu is currently pursuing.

In a post on X, Olusegun stated, “Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso promised to implement these exact tax reforms in his 2023 campaign manifesto, yet he is now staunchly opposing them.”

He challenged Kwankwaso or his supporters to deny this claim, emphasizing that the manifesto is publicly accessible for verification.

However, on Monday, Kwankwaso called on President Tinubu to rethink his position on the Tax Reform Bills, arguing that it is not an appropriate time for such proposals considering the current circumstances faced by Nigerians.

The four tax reform bills—namely the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill—are currently awaiting approval in both chambers of the National Assembly.

Critics have labeled the bills as unfavorable to the North, claiming they would primarily benefit Lagos and Rivers States.

In response to these accusations, Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, refuted the claims, asserting that the bills are designed to “improve the quality of life for Nigerians, particularly those who are disadvantaged and striving to make a living.”
