Ms. Rinsola Abiola, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Bola Tinubu on Citizenship and Leadership, has called for a comprehensive review of the laws and policies governing the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.

She emphasized the need for reforms aimed at improving access to justice for all, particularly for young people.

Abiola made this appeal during an Access to Justice roundtable meeting in Abuja, held as part of the 2024 International Youth Day celebrations. She highlighted that while economic empowerment and education are vital, protecting the rights of young people is essential in building a just and equitable society.

“A key step in the quest to build a truly just and equitable society is to enhance access to justice for young people who are navigating the criminal justice system,” Abiola stated. She expressed concern that many young people in correctional facilities are awaiting trial, underscoring the urgent need for reforms.

Abiola shared her experience accompanying the Minister of State for Youth Development, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, on a visit to Kuje Correctional Centre, where she observed the commendable efforts of the Nigerian Correctional Service officers. However, she noted that the majority of incarcerated individuals are young people, many of whom are detained while awaiting trial.

The SSA stressed that youth advocates agree on the critical need to review criminal justice laws and policies to enhance access to justice and safeguard the welfare and rights of young people. She assured that the roundtable discussion was not just a “talkshop” but a step towards meaningful reform, aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritizes youth development.

“Mr. President, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), has demonstrated unwavering commitment to supporting, empowering, and uplifting young people through several initiatives such as NELFUND (student loans), the Nigeria Youth Academy, and the Corpreneur Scheme,” Abiola added.

The event was organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, in collaboration with the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF/LEAP Africa), the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
