In his recent June 12 Democracy Day speech, President Bola Tinubu revisited history without addressing the pressing issues facing our nation. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, minced no words in his critique, asserting that nothing substantial has changed.
Adegboruwa’s disappointment stems from the missed opportunity to uphold democratic principles. Despite commemorating the significance of June 12, the annulled 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by MKO Abiola, our government has failed to make tangible progress.
As a key figure in the democratic struggle, Tinubu should be leading by example. However, Adegboruwa argues that the past year has seen deterioration rather than improvement. The dream of better subsequent elections, born from the 1993 struggle, remains deferred. Even the polls that brought Tinubu to power left unanswered questions.
On this day, Adegboruwa calls for the release of wrongfully held Nigerians and urges engagement with constituent units to assess whether our practices align with true federation principles. Unfortunately, Tinubu’s speech fell short of providing a roadmap for achieving genuine democracy.
