In the early hours of today, a massive fire broke out at the popular Ali Muhammad Foundation Market in Kano State, causing extensive damage and losses estimated to be in the millions.
The fire, which started around 12:15 PM, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, though authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause.
Eyewitnesses said the fire rapidly spread through several stalls, engulfing goods including food items, clothing, electronics, and more. Traders and nearby residents scrambled to control the blaze before firefighters arrived at the scene.
However, due to the narrow alleys in the market and the intensity of the flames, it took over two hours before the fire was finally brought under control.
Many of the affected traders expressed their frustration, lamenting the loss of their livelihood. One of the traders, tearfully shared that she had just restocked her shop with goods worth over ₦2 million. “I don’t know how I’m going to recover from this. Everything I worked for is gone,” she said.
Officials from the Kano State Fire Service, who were on the scene, urged market authorities to improve fire safety measures and ensure regular maintenance of electrical wiring to prevent future occurrences. The government has also called for calm, reassuring traders that relief efforts will be put in place to assist those affected.
No casualties were reported, but several traders sustained minor injuries while trying to save their goods. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
