In a tragic incident today, August 25, 2024, in Makurdi, Benue State, a construction worker lost his life after a scaffold collapsed at a building site.
The accident occurred in the afternoon at a residential construction project in the Wurukum area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the worker, identified as Mr. Olise, was working on the third floor of the building when the scaffold suddenly gave way. Colleagues immediately rushed to rescue him, but he was severely injured.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries.
Dr. Oche, the physician who attended to him, noted that the victim suffered multiple fractures and internal bleeding. “The patient arrived unconscious and in critical condition. Despite our efforts to stabilize him, the extent of his injuries was too severe,” Dr. Oche stated.
The construction company has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but investigations are reportedly underway to determine the cause of the scaffold failure.
Community leaders are calling on the state government to enforce stricter safety regulations to prevent further tragedies in the construction industry.
