On Wednesday, commercial tricyclists, known locally as “Keke” operators, took to the streets of Warri, Delta State, to protest against the recent increase in fuel prices.
The tricycle operators staged a demonstration by barricading Deco Junction in the Warri South Local Government Area. They voiced their frustration over the surge in petroleum product prices, perceived scarcity, and the resultant difficulties they face.
The protesters, wielding placards, began their march at Enerhen Junction and proceeded to Deco Junction to express their grievances. They gathered early at 6:00 a.m. to initiate the peaceful protest and blockaded the intersection, calling for immediate action from the Federal Government.
Deco Junction serves as a major junction linking Enerhen Junction, Hausa Quarters, and Okumagba Avenue.
During the protest, security was maintained by armed operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. However, the demonstration led to a significant disruption in business activities, causing heavy traffic congestion and a loss of productivity in the area.
Mr. Omatseye Esijolomi, one of the protesters, criticized the steep increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, highlighting the impact on their livelihoods. “We are now forced to buy petrol from the black market at prices ranging from N1,400 to N1,500. This hike has increased transportation costs, severely affecting our work,” he said.
