In a daring operation on 11 July 2024, troops from the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) successfully apprehended two notorious terrorists after a fierce shootout at Geshi Village, along the Rafin Kada Road in the Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State. This operation not only neutralized an immediate threat but also showcased the effectiveness and bravery of the Nigerian military forces in combating terrorism and criminal activities in the region.
According to a press statement released by the Acting Assistant Director of 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, Oni Olubodunde, the troops were swiftly mobilized to the area following intelligence reports. Upon arrival, they engaged the heavily armed men in a fierce gun battle. Displaying superior firepower and tactical prowess, the troops managed to overpower the terrorists, forcing them to flee into the surrounding bush with gunshot wounds. The statement highlighted the decisive nature of the encounter, emphasizing the military’s capability to subdue such threats effectively.
In the aftermath of the clash, the troops continued their operation, pursuing the fleeing criminals. This relentless pursuit led to the capture of two terrorists along with two motorcycles that were used in their criminal activities. The captured terrorists are currently in custody, where they are undergoing interrogation to extract valuable information that could further aid in dismantling terrorist networks in the region.
The commander of the operation commended the troops for their bravery and unwavering dedication to duty. He stated, “This operation is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our troops to ensure the state is free of kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities in our society.” He further affirmed that the Brigade would continue to intensify efforts to rid Taraba State of criminal elements, ensuring the safety and security of its residents.
In a separate development, troops from Headquarters 6 Brigade Jalingo, while on a routine patrol within the Jalingo metropolis, encountered a nine-year-old girl named Dorothy Kwatsumen wandering alone in her school uniform in the Gongomaliki area of Yorro. Demonstrating the compassionate side of their duty, the troops took immediate action to ensure the child’s safety.
Upon inquiry, it was discovered that Dorothy was a pupil of Glory Children Academy. The troops promptly proceeded to the school, where they met with the head teacher. The head teacher informed them that the school had been searching for Dorothy for the past 24 hours and had already reported her disappearance to the Jalingo Police Division. Thanks to the vigilance and swift action of the troops, Dorothy was safely reunited with her relieved parents.
These recent operations underscore the Nigerian Army’s multifaceted role in not only combating terrorism and crime but also in safeguarding the well-being of the civilian population. The successful apprehension of terrorists in Donga and the compassionate rescue of a lost child in Jalingo highlight the dedication and professionalism of the 6 Brigade and Operation Whirl Stroke in maintaining security and supporting the community.
As the Nigerian Army continues its mission to eliminate threats and ensure peace across Taraba State, the recent successes serve as a reminder of the critical importance of military and civilian collaboration in achieving long-term stability and safety. The commitment shown by the troops in these operations is a testament to their resolve to protect the nation and its people from all forms of criminality.
