In a landmark case, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of a notorious internet fraudster, Tunmise, who posed as Hollywood superstar Keanu Reeves to defraud unsuspecting victims of millions of naira.

Tunmise’s fraudulent scheme was uncovered after a thorough investigation by the EFCC, which revealed that he had been using social media platforms to impersonate the famous actor and solicit financial benefits from his victims. He was arrested in March 2024 at Lekki County Estate, Lagos, and subsequently charged with impersonating a celebrity to commit fraud, contrary to Section 22(3) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

During the trial, EFCC prosecution counsel C.C. Okezie presented a detailed case against Tunmise, highlighting how he used the fake identity to commit fraud and deceive his victims. EFCC operative Vincent Sunday Kwambuge testified about the facts of the case, revealing how Tunmise was caught and brought to justice.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke delivered the verdict on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, convicting Tunmise of the charges and sentencing him to a prison term. The EFCC’s conviction of Tunmise serves as a warning to other internet fraudsters and a testament to the commission’s dedication to combating cybercrime in Nigeria.

The EFCC’s success in this case is a significant milestone in the fight against internet fraud and a reminder that cybercriminals will be brought to justice. The commission’s efforts to combat cybercrime are ongoing, and this conviction is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
