On Wednesday, the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos State, sentenced Azeez Adedeji, a driver, to eight years in prison for attempting point-of-sale fraud. Magistrate Patrick Nwaka handed down the judgment on the two counts of attempted fraud. Following this, the defendant chose to pursue a plea bargain agreement, modifying the charges.
According to Punch, it was gathered that on April 16, 2024, in the Oshodi Oke area of Lagos State, Azeez reportedly defrauded Titilope Adeyemi, a POS operator, by deceitfully requesting to withdraw N30,000 but then slyly reducing the amount to N3,000, ultimately stealing N27,000.
Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen argued that this action violated Section 314(1) and 287(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and Azeez pleaded guilty to the charge.
The prosecution counsel pushed for the court to apply the complete terms of the plea bargain accepted by the defendant.
As a result, Magistrate Nwaka declared Azeez guilty and handed him an eight-year sentence, starting from the day of remand, to be served concurrently.
In a report by ThePaan back in March, it was mentioned that the Yaba Magistrate Court arraigned James Akomolafe and Olaoluwa Ogbere for allegedly deceiving multiple POS operators and stealing from them.
So, the defendants went to Mile 12 market, Ketu, pretending to check their account balance at a POS stand. They diverted the operator’s attention, switched the machines with their own, and went to an undisclosed location, taking N662,000 from the account.
