The United Kingdom has pledged its support for Abia State Governor, Mr. Alex Otti, as he embarks on ambitious reforms aimed at modernizing the state’s civil service to meet contemporary demands.

Governor Otti made this announcement during a visit from a delegation from the British High Commission to Nigeria, led by High Commissioner Dr. Richard Montgomery, at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

He highlighted the British government’s commitment to Abia, particularly through funding initiatives that have trained over 500 civil servants in essential digital competencies.

Expressing his appreciation to the High Commissioner for this collaboration, Otti emphasized his vision of cultivating a civil service that is innovative and technologically adept, aligning with the requirements of the 21st century.

Describing the people of Abia as resourceful and industrious, he asserted that the government workforce must evolve alongside advancements in technology.

“We aspire to develop a civil service that is future-ready, equipped for technological integration and innovation,” Otti stated.

The Governor informed the delegation that since he took office 14 months ago, he has been focused on enhancing the business climate in Abia to encourage robust private-sector involvement.

To achieve this, he is working to create a favorable environment characterized by reliable power supply, improved road infrastructure, enhanced security, and essential services.

Otti, who has a background in banking, noted that he entered governance with a clear set of strategies aimed at addressing the needs of the people.

“Governance, for us, centers on the welfare of our citizens and ensuring their happiness. This is why we actively support the private sector,” he clarified.

He also mentioned that the governors of the South-East region are collaborating on initiatives for regional integration to foster overall development.

As part of this economic strategy, Otti revealed that the South-East Governors Forum is exploring plans for a regional railway system to facilitate trade and boost economic activities.

In his address, the British High Commissioner commended Governor Otti for his effective resource management, the establishment of a digitally compliant civil service, and advancements in infrastructure.

Dr. Richard, who also serves as the UK’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, assured Abia State of continued support for its economic development.

He noted that, in addition to the digital sector, the British High Commission is eager to collaborate with the state government in various areas, including trade, energy, transportation, technology, manufacturing, and other fields that would generate employment opportunities.
