Minister for Works, Senator David Umahi, has started talks with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to fast-track road infrastructure projects across Nigeria.
During a meeting with BPP management, led by Director-General Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, Umahi stressed the importance of eliminating bureaucratic delays that hinder timely project delivery.
A statement from the Minister’s Special Assistant, Uchenna Orji, quoted Umahi as saying, “To achieve success in the road infrastructure revolution, we must remove bureaucratic constraints, particularly in the BPP’s project evaluation processes.”
Umahi explained that the government’s focus on road infrastructure aims to meet the needs of citizens and requires adherence to best practices at every stage. He acknowledged the BPP’s key role in ensuring accountability, consistency in pricing, and value for money in contract execution. However, he emphasized that project delays are a significant obstacle to the Bureau’s goals.
“We need to work closely with the BPP to speed up the delivery of road infrastructure projects under the Renewed Hope administration,” Umahi said. “Since we took office, we’ve committed to best practices and introduced innovations to provide Nigerians with roads that last.”
Dr. Adedokun praised the Minister’s leadership and assured him of the BPP’s support in ensuring road projects are completed on time, with transparency and accountability. He acknowledged the Ministry of Works’ visibility and importance, noting that when projects fail, the public often holds the Ministry responsible.
“We are committed to working with you to ensure that Nigerians receive quality roads that stand the test of time,” he said. “Together, we can meet President Tinubu’s vision for the road sector with value for money and sustainability.”
This collaboration marks a significant step towards overcoming procurement challenges and ensuring the successful delivery of road infrastructure projects.
