The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has voiced his concern regarding the recent surge in electricity tariffs imposed by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), citing its significant impact on the university’s budget.

In an email sent to university staff and students, Professor Egbewole highlighted the institution’s monthly electricity bill, which has escalated from N70 million to N230 million, labeling the situation as ‘unsustainable’.

He emphasized the urgent need for a thorough reassessment of current electricity consumption practices, urging both staff and students to adopt more responsible energy usage habits and to support the administration’s cost-saving measures.

Professor Egbewole revealed that negotiations for alternative power supply solutions are being intensified and are expected to yield positive outcomes soon.

To this end, he announced that all new buildings under construction in certain faculties will include provisions for alternative power sources, with strategies being devised to ensure reliable alternative power options across all faculties and units.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of safeguarding these new facilities from theft and vandalism, calling upon the entire university community to protect and maintain these resources.

He expressed gratitude to the staff and students for their resilience and cooperation during recent disruptions in electricity and water supply, commending their collective effort and sense of responsibility.

Professor Egbewole assured the university community of the administration’s ongoing commitment to addressing economic challenges and pledged to continue providing a conducive learning and working environment despite financial constraints.
