Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians, particularly those in leadership positions, to embody genuine leadership by placing community service and legacy-building ahead of personal interests.

During the inauguration of the Ibapon Central Mosque in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Shettima called for a renewed focus on spiritual duties and community engagement, especially in a time when individualism appears to be on the rise, often overshadowing devotion to God.

He expressed concerns about the changing societal values in modern Nigeria, stating, “Today, we see a world unfortunately driven by self-interest rather than selflessness, where many view community contributions and spiritual commitments as burdens or distractions.”

Referring to the mosque—an impressive project financed by Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari of the Oyo North Senatorial District—Shettima deemed it a “gift for generations,” standing in stark contrast to the prevalent materialistic attitudes.

“Every moment in our lives serves as a reminder of our transience, and the fleeting nature of life emphasizes the importance of filling our time with meaningful actions that hold significance in the afterlife,” he remarked.

The Vice President praised the mosque as an embodiment of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), highlighting that such endeavors exemplify the legacy-building that society urgently requires.

“This represents a legacy, a connection between our earthly existence and the hereafter, rooted in compassion and commitment,” he emphasized.

In a direct appeal to political leaders and affluent Nigerians, Shettima questioned the lasting value of material wealth: “We must reflect on what endures when this life concludes. Ultimately, what lasts are the records of our altruistic actions, our dedication to our faith, and our charitable endeavors.”

The newly established mosque is anticipated to become a significant spiritual hub for Muslims in Ogbomoso and neighboring areas, with the Vice President expressing optimism that it will “serve as a wellspring of spiritual fortitude and inspiration for this community and beyond.”
