Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to collaborate with all 36 states in Nigeria to tackle the pressing issues of flooding and other natural disasters.
During a recent meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, who visited to express condolences regarding the devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State, Shettima highlighted that the President has authorized a financial allocation of N3 billion for each state to combat natural disasters and enhance their resilience.
Shettima described the flood disaster in Borno as a significant national tragedy, affecting not only the state but the entire nation. He underscored the interconnectedness of climate change, environmental factors, and economic challenges, stating, “From Bayelsa to Sokoto, nearly every region has felt the impact of these flooding events.”
The Vice President expressed confidence that the administration, under President Tinubu’s proactive leadership, is prepared to address the flooding crisis and associated challenges effectively. “The President is determined to work alongside the states to resolve these issues, ensuring that every part of the federation feels included and supported,” he stated
In acknowledging the leadership of Speaker Abbas, Shettima praised his ability to maintain stability within the National Assembly despite the influx of new members. “Your leadership has been instrumental in fostering harmony, which is vital for our democratic process,” he remarked, conveying gratitude on behalf of President Tinubu and the citizens of Borno for the Speaker’s empathy and support.
In response, Speaker Abbas conveyed his condolences to the Vice President, the President, and the people of Borno, assuring them that the National Assembly is committed to assisting those affected by the floods.
“We are dedicated to exploring ways to support the impacted communities. Your Excellency, we share in your sorrow and concerns. Together, we will ensure that those affected can return to normalcy and regain their livelihoods,” he said, urging for unity in overcoming the challenges faced by the state.
