The battle of who should win the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year (POTY) has intensified as the year draws closer.

Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface has named his favourite player to be crowned Africa’s best.

Two Nigerians are top contenders for the award, Victor Boniface and Ademola Lookman who were amazing for their respective clubs.

Lookman helped Nigeria win silver at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after scoring three goals but Boniface was very unlucky after being ruled out due to injury.

The duo met in the UEFA Europa League final when Leverkusen played against Atalanta, but it was Lookman who prevailed after scoring a glorious hat-trick to end Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.

Despite his exploit in the Europa League, Lookman was able to score eleven league goals last season with seven assists in 31 appearances, while Boniface scored 14 league goals with eight assists to help his club win the league.

Boniface after winn Bundesliga Rockie of the Month four times, winning the league and the German DFB Pokal and also in the Europa League final, Lookman won the Europa League, AFCON silver medalist and a Champions League finish in the Serie A.

But when asked who he prefers to be the African Best, Boniface responded, “Probably between me and Lookman, I will go for myself as the African Footballer of the Year, I rate myself that high.

“If it’s just what we did last season, I’ll pick myself,” he said.
