Former Super Eagles forward Victor Moses scored his first goal in the English Championship since 2010, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a result for Luton Town, who fell to a 3-1 defeat against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Friday night.
Plymouth started strong, with Rami Al Hajj opening the scoring in the first half.
The Swedish midfielder fired a powerful shot past Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski to give the home side a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Plymouth doubled their advantage through Ibrahim Cissoko, who scored in the 69th minute.
Two minutes later, Luton responded, with Moses pulling a goal back for the Hatters.
The 33-year-old, who had come on as a substitute in the 58th minute for the injured Mads Andersen, struck a low shot past Plymouth’s goalkeeper to register his first goal for Luton since joining as a free agent earlier this month.
The goal was a significant moment for Moses, who last scored in the Championship in January 2010 while playing for Crystal Palace in a 1-0 win—ironically also against Plymouth.
His return to the English second tier after over a decade away marked a bittersweet moment, as Luton ultimately couldn’t turn the tide.
Cissoko sealed the victory for Plymouth in stoppage time, scoring his second goal of the night to secure all three points for the hosts and leave Luton struggling at the bottom end of the table.
Moses, a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner with Nigeria, made his debut for Luton Town off the bench last weekend and has quickly made his mark.
However, Luton’s defensive frailties continue to be a concern, with their efforts not enough to stop Plymouth’s attacking threat.
Moses, who previously enjoyed a spell in the Premier League with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Wigan, will be hoping to make a greater impact in the coming games as Luton seek to climb the table.
