Vice President Kashim Shettima has hailed the six soldiers who tragically lost their lives while defending against a terrorist assault in Damboa, Borno State, as timeless heroes whose contributions will eternally resonate.
On January 4, 2025, the Senate Committee on Army expressed its sorrow over the sacrifice of these courageous soldiers who valiantly confronted ISWAP/Boko Haram militants in Sabon Gari, located within the Domboa Local Government Area.
In his remarks, the vice president conveyed his heartfelt condolences and unwavering support to the families of the fallen heroes. The attack in Sabon Gari saw terrorists attempting an ambush on troops stationed at a Forward Operating Base.
Thanks to the soldiers’ swift and decisive actions, reinforced by air support from Operation HADIN KAI, they successfully neutralized 34 terrorists and seized weapons and ammunition, significantly diminishing the attackers’ strength.
In a statement released from Abuja by his Media Assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima acknowledged that the military achieved a crucial victory in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism but lamented the heavy toll that freedom exacts.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of our brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation in Damboa,” he stated. “These six gallant soldiers exhibited remarkable bravery in the face of peril, dedicating themselves to the protection of their fellow citizens.”
The Vice President commended the soldiers’ valor, emphasizing, “Their sacrifices serve as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary cost of peace and security. These heroes gave their lives to ensure that their fellow Nigerians can live in safety, liberated from the threats of insecurity that have plagued our nation.”
