The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control has shut down numerous packaged water factories in the Alimosho region of Lagos State due to operating in unsanitary conditions.

NAFDAC revealed this information in a statement and some pictures that were posted on their X account on Wednesday. According to the agency, the closures were prompted by inspections that were conducted by the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, which found out that the factories were operating in conditions that were both untidy and unsafe, thereby contravening good manufacturing practice regulations.

In their statement it says, “The inspections revealed that the unhygienic conditions of these factories posed serious health risks due to potential contamination by pathogenic microorganisms.

“As a result, several factories were sealed for non-compliance with NAFDAC regulations.”

NAFDAC also emphasized the importance of staying alert while buying sachets and bottled water and also recommended verifying the sources of the supplies. Additionally, citizens were encouraged to promptly report any questionable activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Earlier in May, according to a report by thepaan, NAFDAC already sealed three unregistered bakeries and a sachet water factory in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The agency highlighted that these facilities were operating in makeshift structures with substandard hygiene practices, which can cause significant health hazards to consumers.
