Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) in Lagos, Nigeria, is launching a new program to empower young women with valuable skills in information and communication technology (ICT). This initiative, partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Generation Unlimited, aims to train 5,000 girls aged 13-24.

The Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership Program focuses on providing young women with the education and training they need to succeed in today’s digital world. The program will offer courses in four key areas:

Computer Hardware Repair

Mobile Phone Repair

Website Development

Mobile Application Development

These skills are in high demand in the job market, and the program aims to equip girls with the knowledge and experience to compete for these opportunitiiy.

Yabatech recognizes the importance of a comprehensive approach to education. In addition to technical training, the program will also provide participants with essential life skills and leadership opportunities. This holistic approach aims to empower girls not only in their careers but also in their personal lives.

The program will also focus on improving the capacity of vocational training institutions to deliver effective programs for girls. This includes using teaching methods that are specifically designed to address the needs of female learners.

Yabatech officials are encouraging young women to take advantage of this valuable training opportunity. The program offers the chance to gain valuable skills, participate in the digital economy, and pursue career aspirations.

The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, also expressed her support for the program. She highlighted the importance of equipping young women with the skills needed to compete in the job market and to become financially independent. Traditionally male-dominated fields like mobile phone repair and web development will now be open to these young women.

The Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership Program is a significant step towards empowering young women in Nigeria. By providing access to education and training in high-demand skills, the program can help bridge the gender gap in the tech industry and create a brighter future for young women in Lagos.
