Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has finally responded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) summons following a period of delay and a previous attempt by the agency to apprehend him.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ohiare Michael, Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, it was confirmed that Bello decided to honor the EFCC’s invitation after thorough consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.
The statement reads, “The former Governor, who holds a deep respect for the rule of law and established authorities, had previously sought to safeguard his fundamental rights to ensure due process. He has been represented by his legal team at every court hearing concerning the case, which is currently before a competent court of jurisdiction. It is now important for Bello to respond to the EFCC’s invitation to clear his name, as he has nothing to hide.”
Bello is a strong supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its efforts to foster sustainable economic development and combat corruption in Nigeria. Notably, during his tenure, Bello was the first Kogi State Governor to implement an anti-corruption mechanism aimed at curbing graft and ensuring that state resources benefited the public.
Michael also mentioned that Bello was accompanied to the EFCC Headquarters by prominent Nigerian figures. He expressed hope that the Commission would conduct itself professionally and uphold Bello’s rights as a citizen.
Details of Bello’s interaction with EFCC operatives will be disclosed at a later time.
This development follows Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja adjourning the alleged money laundering case against Bello, which is set to resume on September 25. Bello faces a 19-count charge by the EFCC alleging the laundering of ₦80 billion. He has previously ignored EFCC summons and court proceedings related to the case.
