A 22-year-old housewife, Zainab Isa, allegedly killed her 25-year-old husband, Ibrahim Yahaya, both residents of Abbari Ward in Damaturu, capital of Yobe state, over a domestic argument that turned violent.

The suspect has been arrested by the Yobe State Police Command which stated that it was saddened by the unfortunate actions of the couple that led to the death of a promising young man due to the consequences of an abusive marriage.
According to the Command PPRO, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, on June 26, 2024, the C Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from a neighbor in Abbari Ward, Damaturu, about a couple: Ibrahim Yahaya, 25, and Zainab Isa, 22.

According to the PPRO, the argument began around 9:00 AM and quickly turned into a physical scuffle, during which Zainab allegedly used a knife to stab Ibrahim in the chest. Ibrahim succumbed to his injuries before the police rescue team could arrive.

Zainab has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing investigation by the State CID. She will be arraigned in court following the completion of the investigation.

In her confession, Zainab claimed that she acted in self-defense. She explained that during the altercation, Ibrahim was beating and kicking her, despite her still recovering from a recent medical operation related to childbirth.

Zainab further revealed that their marriage had been plagued by violence from the beginning, with disputes often arising over basic necessities such as food and money.

The abuse continued even after the birth of their first child and persisted following the arrival of their second, despite Ibrahim’s inability to provide for their family’s needs.

Reacting to the incident, Commissioner of Police Garba Ahmed urged couples experiencing domestic abuse to report such cases to the authorities for appropriate intervention.

He stressed the importance of seeking help to find durable solutions and suggested that individuals file complaints with Sharia or family courts if necessary.

The Commissioner also called on community members to take an active interest in addressing marital issues, considering both the social and economic aspects, to prevent minor conflicts from escalating into severe crimes like homicide.

This tragic case underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and proactive measures to combat domestic violence. As the community mourns the loss of Ibrahim Yahaya, they are left to reflect on the steps needed to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
