Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, the representative for the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, has officially switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement of Gumi’s defection was made during a plenary session in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read a letter from the lawmaker regarding his decision.

In his letter, Gumi cited ongoing and unresolved internal conflicts within the PDP as the primary reason for his departure. He expressed concerns about the party’s structure in his constituency, noting that “there are currently two chairmen for the PDP in Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency. One was unlawfully removed, while the other has joined me, leaving the party without a solid foundation in my area. This disarray has hindered my ability to effectively represent my constituents and deliver the benefits of democracy to them.”

Following the reading of the letter, Speaker Abbas called upon Gumi to stand and officially welcomed him to the APC.

However, the announcement was met with a challenge from the Minority Leader of the House, Kingsley Chinda, who raised a point of order. Chinda contended that the Speaker should declare Gumi’s seat vacant due to his defection, asserting that there is no current dispute within the PDP that would warrant his departure.
