Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has issued a stern warning to individuals and groups who may try to exploit the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu for their own selfish economic gain.
Kalu expressed his support for the recent call made by a group of 50 members of the House of Representatives for a political solution to Kanu’s detention. He emphasized that Kanu should not be used as a political tool for any political agenda.
The deputy speaker commended the lawmakers who invoked the relevant sections of the constitution and the administration of the Criminal Justice Act in their appeal for Kanu’s release. He expressed optimism that the South East caucus would also unite in support of this effort.
Kalu highlighted the importance of Kanu’s release in restoring peace in the South East region. He referred to his private engagements with the authorities on achieving a political solution in Kanu’s case, noting that progress has been made.
However, he stressed the need to keep high-profile security issues confidential to protect the gains made so far.
The deputy speaker revealed that he has personally met with Kanu several times during his detention and expressed hope for his eventual freedom.
He discussed the importance of sustainable peace in the region during their last meeting, and this agreement has been communicated to the authorities and Kanu’s family representative.
While thanking the lawmakers for their support, Kalu urged the Igbo people to remain calm and hopeful, avoiding any provocative comments. He emphasized that the government cannot be compelled through covert or overt means.
Kalu reiterated that the present administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has prioritized the development of the South East region.
He assured the people that the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill, which has been transmitted to the president for his assent, is a significant step towards rebuilding the region, which was severely affected by the civil war.
