The Senate has extended the lifespan of the 2023 supplementary budget from June 30 to December 31, 2024.

In a swift move on Thursday, the Red Chamber suspended its rules and passed a bill for this extension in under 20 minutes.

Prior to passing the bill, lawmakers held a two-hour closed-door session. Previously, in December 2023, both Chambers of the National Assembly extended the capital budget implementation period from December 31, 2023, to March 31, 2024, alongside the passage of the N2.17 trillion 2023 supplementary budget in November 2023.

In March, responding to President Bola Tinubu’s requests, the Senate and the House of Representatives further extended the budget implementation period from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024.

With the June 30, 2024, deadline approaching for the affected 2023 budgetary allocations, both chambers interrupted their recess, convening separate sessions on Thursday to deliberate on additional extensions, ahead of their originally scheduled resumption date of July 2, 2024.
