A tragic road accident in Kano on Monday resulted in the loss of twenty-five lives, with several others sustaining injuries. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano State, officially reported the incident.
The accident happened near Dangwaro International Market, just outside Kano City. The victims, traveling from Maiduguri, were aboard a trailer carrying cows en route to the southern part of Nigeria. The trailer collided with another vehicle and overturned multiple times. According to Abdullahi, the vehicle involved was a trailer (IVECO) with registration number XA 311 ZB.
“We received an emergency call around 03:15 am on July 1, 2024. Upon receiving the information, we swiftly dispatched our personnel and a vehicle to the scene, arriving at 03:30 am to rescue the victims,” Ibrahim recounted.
The commander attributed the accident to speeding, reckless driving, and overloading, factors that contributed to the driver losing control. During the rescue operation, authorities recovered various items including six motorcycles, ten mobile phones, livestock (goats and rams), maize, and N400,000 in cash, all of which were handed over to the police.
“All injured victims were promptly transported to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical care,” the statement confirmed. “Tragically, medical staff pronounced 25 victims deceased,” he added.
Abdullahi emphasized the dangers of transporting goods and animals alongside passengers, urging motorists to prioritize safety on the road. Earlier in the week, another fatal accident claimed the lives of fourteen worshippers when a trailer collided with a group praying by the roadside.
