Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusuf Lawal, confirmed the attack. He reported that the Divisional Police Officer in Gwoza informed him of the casualties and that the injured were evacuated to a hospital.
An eyewitness named Buba stated that the bomber targeted a wedding ceremony, distabilizing what was meant to be a day of joy.
“We heard a loud sound of explosives, accompanied by dust; then we saw bodies on the ground. He said several victims were evacuated to the hospital while security agencies were deployed to sanitise the area.
Another eyewithness said, “I’m not too sure of the exact number of those who were killed because I was not at the exact event, but some of the people are mentioning six, others are saying seven, but the figure is more than what they are mentioning; that is what we suspect.
“You know the event was a wedding party, and many visitors and guests were in attendance. That is why I’m telling you that confidently, as my friend.”
The second bomber, disguised as a mourner, struck at the burial site of the earlier victims, resulting in additional casualties and injuries.
Counterinsurgency expert ZagaZola Makama confirmed the second attack in a post on social media, noting that it occurred as people prepared for a funeral.
The explosion resulted in at least one more death and 16 additional injuries.
In response, the military announced a curfew in Gwoza to ensure security and prevent further incidents.
