Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has emphasized the need for character, competence, capability, and integrity to be the foundation of the leadership recruitment process in Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
In a message shared on his official X account, Obi extended his congratulations to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), on her reappointment to lead the organization.
The former governor of Anambra State highlighted that Okonjo-Iweala’s ascent through meaningful contributions to society serves as a significant lesson for Nigerian leaders, asserting that true leadership entails a commitment to serving the people.
“I am genuinely thrilled about the reappointment of my esteemed elder sister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization for a second term, effective September 1, 2025,” Obi stated.
He praised her commendable character, impressive credentials, and extensive achievements in public service, noting that these qualities distinguish her as a capable leader for such a prestigious organization.
“Her substantial contributions to our national development and the global community make her one of Nigeria’s most valuable exports—a symbol of diligence, excellence, and a source of hope and motivation for the younger generation,” he added in his tweet.
