The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Yahaya Abubakar to the position of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). This significant appointment was disclosed in a statement released by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations for the Commission.
Before this appointment, Abubakar served as the AIG in charge of Zone 14, Katsina. With his new role, he will represent the North East Geopolitical Zone on the Police Management Team. This position became vacant following the recent retirement of DIG Habu Sani, who was the DIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau and also represented the North East Zone.
In addition to Abubakar’s appointment, the PSC has also approved the promotion of 122 senior police officers. This includes the elevation of ten Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General (AIG), fifteen Deputy Commissioners of Police to the rank of substantive Commissioners, and thirty-six Assistant Commissioners of Police to the rank of Deputy Commissioners. Moreover, sixty-one Chief Superintendents of Police have been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police.
These promotions are part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to recognize and reward the hard work and dedication of officers within the Nigerian Police Force. The elevation of these officers is expected to bolster the leadership and operational efficiency of the police force across various levels. The newly appointed and promoted officers are expected to bring their wealth of experience and expertise to bear in their new roles, thereby enhancing the overall security architecture of the country.
Yahaya Abubakar’s appointment as DIG is seen as a strategic move, considering his extensive experience and previous successes in various capacities within the force. His leadership in Zone 14, Katsina, has been marked by significant achievements in crime reduction and community policing, which are expected to continue and expand in his new role.
The promotions and appointments reflect the PSC’s commitment to ensuring that the most qualified and capable officers are placed in positions where they can make the most impact. This is particularly crucial in the current security climate, where effective leadership and strategic oversight are essential for addressing the complex security challenges facing the nation.
The newly promoted AIGs, Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and Assistant Commissioners will be expected to step into their roles with immediate effect, bringing renewed energy and focus to their duties. The PSC’s decision is a reminder of the importance of merit-based advancement within the police force, aiming to inspire other officers to strive for excellence in their service.
As the Police Service Commission continues to implement these strategic appointments and promotions, the public will be keenly observing the impact of these changes on the overall effectiveness and responsiveness of the Nigerian Police Force. The goal is to see an enhanced police force that can better serve and protect the citizens, upholding law and order with integrity and professionalism.
