During a recent address to the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara outlined several instances where his administration faced sabotage. He highlighted that some individuals were making covert efforts to derail projects and tarnish his government’s reputation. He pointed out attempts to disrupt the Rivers Economic and Investment Summit, where key speakers were urged not to participate. Despite these efforts, many speakers honored their commitments and attended the summit.
Siminalayi Fubara has also raised concerns about efforts by detractors to undermine his administration. He believes these actions aim to prevent the effective delivery of governance and services to the people of Rivers State.
Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration is committed to impactful projects that will benefit the people of Rivers State. He mentioned the challenges faced with the revival of the Port Harcourt International Automobile Spare Parts Trading and Commercial Centre. Previous contractors, who had abandoned the project due to lack of support, were allegedly encouraged to sue the state government to halt the project’s progress. However, these contractors refused to engage in what Fubara described as sabotage, acknowledging the state’s efforts to settle outstanding payments.
The governor also addressed issues surrounding the construction of 20,000 housing units in the Mgbodo-Aluu area. He revealed that the project faced litigation from land grabbers allegedly sponsored by opposition elements. These individuals laid claim to lands that the government had previously acquired and paid for, leading to numerous court cases.
The Port Harcourt Ring Road project, which will traverse six local government areas, is particularly notable. It includes six flyovers, over 12 roundabouts, and interchanges, with significant progress already made. The governor revealed that 77 percent of the project’s cost has been paid to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the company handling the project.
Despite these setbacks, Governor Fubara highlighted the significant strides his administration has made. He noted that within his first year in office, his government had implemented strategies to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), saving funds that are now being used for major projects. These include the expansive 50.51km Port Harcourt Ring Road, the Trans-Kalabari Road, and the Elele-Egbeda-Omoku Road.
Additionally, the Trans-Kalabari Road project, which connects Port Harcourt to three Kalabari local governments, and the Elele-Egbeda-Omoku Road are also progressing. Both projects aim to improve connectivity and economic activities in their respective areas. Governor Fubara stated that substantial payments have been made to ensure the timely completion of these projects.
Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State that despite the obstacles, his administration remains focused on delivering quality services and infrastructure. He mentioned that over 34 projects inherited from the previous administration have been completed, with more in progress. He also expressed his commitment to improving healthcare and education infrastructure across the state.
Governor Fubara emphasized that his administration’s priority is to serve the people of Rivers State, despite the challenges posed by detractors. He remains determined to ensure that the state’s resources are used to deliver lasting and meaningful benefits to its citizens.
