Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, newly reinstated as the Emir of Kano, has expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his non- interference in the process that led to his reinstatement by the Kano State government. According to Sanusi, President Tinubu upheld the principles of law and order, resisting any attempts to use federal influence to obstruct the reinstatement. Sanusi was officially reinstated on Friday by Governor Abba Yusuf, following the signing of the new Kano Emirate Council Law 2024.
This law, which repealed the previous Emirate Council Law enacted by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, was passed by the State House of Assembly. Sanusi’ s reinstatement marks a significant development in the long- standing political saga in Kano. In an interview, Sanusi elaborated on the events leading to his reinstatement, emphasizing President Tinubu’ s principled stance.
He noted that Tinubu recognized the issue as a local matter, refraining from federal interference. ” As you know, I was appointed the 14th Emir of the single emirate of Kano in June 2014, and now I am reappointed as the Emir of the single emirate of Kano, ” Sanusi stated. Sanusi expressed his appreciation for President Tinubu’ s respect for constitutional processes and the separation of powers. “
I would also like to express my thanks to His Excellency Alhaji Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, without whose principled stance of non- interference in the internal affairs of the state, this would not have been possible. The president has shown that he is a respecter of the constitution and the separation of powers, recognizing that this is a purely local matter and that the government has a responsibility to do what is right for the state. ” Sanusi acknowledged the pressure on President Tinubu to involve the federal government but praised the president for resisting such pressure.
” I’ m aware that he has resisted all pressure to get the federal government involved, ” Sanusi remarked. He sees his reinstatement as a continuation of his previous service and an opportunity to further contribute to the development of Kano. Sanusi’ s reinstatement has been met with a mix of reactions, with some viewing it as justice served against past injustices, while others express concerns about the potential for renewed tensions in the region. Despite these differing perspectives, Sanusi’ s return to the throne is a significant moment in Kano’ s political landscape. In conclusion, Sanusi’ s remarks highlight President Tinubu’ s commitment to upholding the constitution and respecting the autonomy of state governments. By choosing not to interfere, Tinubu has set a precedent for handling similar local matters, reinforcing the importance of local governance and the rule of law in Nigeria
